Del Monte Milk Barn ~ 1890

Historic Del Monte Milk Barn

Our NEW tasting room in Carmel Valley is actually very, very old. This historic building dates back to the 1890s and is listed on the Monterey County Register of Historic Resources. William Hatton built Del Monte Milk Barn to support the needs of the guests of the Del Monte Hotel in Monterey.

Interestingly, Tom Nason, Cima Collina’s Hilltop Ranch & Vineyard General Manager is the great nephew oTom Nasonf William Hatton. Tom said, “the creamery was famous for making Monterey Jack Cheese.” He added, that the cupola was used as a “ventilation tower to cool the fresh milk.“  Lucky for us, Tom Nason still owns Del Monte dairy equipment and several milk bottles that have been passed down through the generations of his family.  These items will be on display in our tasting room.

The building has served many purposes over the years. Many people are familiar with the its most recent use as the popular Village Fish House. It was also the Iron Kettle restaurant for 16 years,  an art gallery and Carmel Valley’s first post office.

Dé Cabral, owner of the Iron Kettle, said “the customers enjoyed being welcomed by my mother, Donna Hamilton. She warmly greeted them with fresh coffee and berry scones every morning.” Throughout the years, her mother became a town hero. She offered free meals to Carmel Valley flood victims. And we can all thank Donna for her work in formally registering the building as a protected historic resource.

What’s Old is New Again!

We are returning the building back to its original Milk Barn color of white with green trim. A new foundation Paintinghas been poured, paint dried, and our ABC license has been posted. We plan to open the new tasting room in June.
