With great sadness we share that Cima Collina founder Richard “Dick” Lumpkin has passed away peacefully at the age of 84. Born and raised in central Illinois, Dick relocated to Carmel Valley in the late 90’s, where he entered the Monterey wine scene and planted Hilltop Ranch Vineyard. Cima Collina Winery shortly followed with his partnership with Winemaker Annette Hoff in 2004. Over the years, Dick has been a friendly fixture at the Carmel Valley tasting room, a great storyteller and biggest fan of Cima Collina wines. For the Cima team, he was a continual supportive and encouraging force behind the wines and his desire to share them with the community was contagious. He will dearly be missed.
Dick leaves a legacy in the community, both in Carmel Valley and home in Illinois. Back in Illinois, under his leadership, The Lumpkin Family Foundation, formed by his grandmother Besse A. Lumpkin in 1953, has grown into a major regional philanthropic enterprise. He was also extremely active in the Special Olympics. As President of Consolidated Communications Inc., when employees came to him with the idea for the Special Olympics Family Festival in the early 1980s, Dick knew it was the beginning of something big. In the 35 years since the festival’s founding in 1984, Dick never missed one.
