Cima Collina Winery hosted a Trashion Fashion Show as a benefit for Sustainable Carmel in celebration of Earth Day. The Trashion Show offered over twenty local designers a chance to show off their talent of transforming their trash and recyclables into couture attire. Contenders for the distinguished title of Dumpster Diva or Divo were local artists, designers, CSU Monterey Bay and Art Institute of SF students. Congratulations to our Trashion Show winners!
“Dumpster Diva” (1st place) demonstrating the Best Use of Recyclable-Reusable Materials - Designer: Mercedes Maciel with model Clarissa Romero, CSUMB students. What she created: a vest and pencil skirt out of plastic bags, yoga mat-like material, plastic strawberry containers with corks and wood barrels from the winery. One of the judges, Shelby Lambert from Edible Monterey Bay described it as an “Overall farm to table-dragonfly.”
“Best Themed” – Designer/Model: Sade Wallace, student at the Art Institute of San Francisco. What she created - a corseted dress made from recycled denim and little plastic bags from the laundry mat. "It's very Marie Antoinette," Sade said of the dress.
“Most Creative” - Designers: Stephanie Sumler (CSUMB grad of 2013) and Frankie Rodriguez. Model: Nikki Spyte. What they created - A dress out of plastic shipping material, tape, shirt and vinyl (reconstructed), plastic spoons, 1 gallon jugs, plastic and metal bottle caps, metal mesh and plastic medical tubes.
“Best Accessorized” – Designer/Model: Susan Gibbons. As a restaurant owner for years, Susan commented, “I have access to many recyclables.” What she created – repurposed skirt covered with fringed 5 pound coffee bags from Carmel Valley Coffee Roasting Company. Shoes and hand bag made from the same bags but woven. A "leather" jacket made from garbage bags, fused by ironing with a pressing cloth. Sleeves are 10 pound onion bags.
